PROGRAMS FOR RESIDENT SERVICES

United Housing ManagementUnited Housing Management’s goal for the residents of each property is to build a self-reliant neighborhood that meets the needs of the families and seniors living in the development, to utilize techniques of organizing and collective action to mobilize residents to engage actively in decisions affecting their housing and their neighborhood and to establish a social atmosphere which is helpful and supportive, rather than hostile.

Our Program for Resident Services offers many services to the children, youth, adults, and to the senior population by utilizing its resource bank. The youth will have the opportunity to participate in an after school tutorial program at United Housing Management’s Neighborhood Network Learning Center in collaboration with the Avalar Learning Center. Certified teachers from the Boston Public School System provide private and small group tutoring to the students in reading, English, grammar, basic math, algebra and college preparatory sessions.

The following is an outline of our efforts that ensure that we are integrating and coordinating existing local resources in a focused and directed approach meet the residents' needs:

- Developing a senior information newsletter monthly.
- Developing a senior hour weekly to meet one day per week to discuss issues surrounding healthcare, social security, and safety issues with the assistance of staff from the Mayor's Seniority Program, Boston Elder Service, and Boston Senior Home Care and Area B – Boston Community Police Department.

Resident Services

United Housing Management recognizes the delicate role that a Site Manager has in relation to the various social issues residents sometimes experience. Management personnel are not expected to diagnose or treat a resident's social problem, however, they are expected to take the necessary steps to protect the rights to safety and peaceful enjoyment when another resident's action interferes with that right. There are times when a person will benefit from the assistance of outside social services or a reasonable accommodation in order to maintain their tenancy.Lease violations which threaten the health and safety of other residents will be addressed with that resident in a concerned, confidential manner intended where possible to preserve the continued occupancy of the residents. It is our belief that problem-solving promotes active communication between residents and managers, improve the lives of the residents and builds a sense of community in the process.

United Housing ManagementMany families living in assisted housing have unmet various social needs, because of these issues it is important that we assess service needs, link residents to supportive services and provide follow-up to assure that these needs have been met.

- Office, home visits and advocacy, as needed
- Referral and information is available to all residents
- Rental assistance when needed
- Furniture assistance when needed
- Resident educational scholarships

Educating residents on service availability, application procedures, client’s rights and helping the residents to build informal support networks with other residents, family and friends is also a part of United Housing Management’s Program for Resident Services.
